Some books about crystals are large and heavy. Those at the beginning of their journey with crystals may prefer a more portable book that they can bring with them to stores while shopping for crystals. The Crystal Bible: Volume 1 is small enough to travel with. It begins with a section full of general information on crystals; readers will learn about how crystals are formed, their healing properties, and how to select and care for them.

The next part of the book is an encyclopedia of about 200 crystals, which includes color photographs. As introductory books about crystals go, this one is great because it contains a lot of well-organized information. It should be noted that some readers felt there was inaccurate information in the book, but author Judy Hall is well-known and very knowledgeable in the field of crystals, so this could come down to miscommunication between author and readers.

We highly recommend using this book as a starting point for your research but would encourage you to branch out as you gain more knowledge on the subject.

When searching for books about crystals, you are likely to find some that claim to have been written through channeling with a higher being; the author of Gemisphere Luminary makes such a claim. Author Michael Katz says this book was written through channeled conversations with the Gemstone Guardians, inner-world beings responsible for fulfilling the purpose and maintaining the effects of gemstones everywhere.

This book does not contain much scientific information about crystals. Believers of channeling with other-world beings may be interested in what this one has to say, but those searching for more verifiable information may want to skip Gemisphere Luminary.

This book contains information about 500 crystals, which is far more than most other books about crystals out there. One reason for the high number of crystal entries in this book is the author's decision to include separate pages for different colors of the same crystal. This is helpful because different colors of the same crystal can have different healing properties.

The entire book is organized by color, which is helpful for those who are looking for crystals to correspond with the chakras. The pages have colored edges, making it easy to find the section you are looking for by turning the book on its side.

The Verdict

Which of these books you choose will depend on how you intend to use crystals. If you are just beginning to learn about crystals, we suggest either The Illustrated Directory of Healing Crystals or The Complete Crystal Bible, both of which are written by Cassandra Eason. The first one is a smaller book with about 150 crystals, while the second one delves more deeply into the world of crystals.

As you narrow down your interest in crystals, you may like to look into one of the other books about crystals on our list. Either of Judy Hall's books, Crystal Healings or Crystal Prescriptions, would be great for people who strictly want to learn about using crystals for healing the body.

Those who would like to explore more about using crystals for activities such as divination, tarot reading, and protection, may enjoy Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem, and Metal Magic, or Crystal Enchantments: A Complete Guide to Stones and Their Magical Properties.
