‘Crystals are living beings at the beginning of creation’, writes Nikola Tesla. And like living beings, they carry the intelligence of nature and intensity of energies flowing under their transparent, unchanged surface. When you face a new crystal for the face time, you feel a relationship is already underway. Cleansing crystals is just a way to smooth the path to a positive energy release.
The cleansing process is not your average, run of the mill, soap and water rinse. The purpose is to decontaminate the stone of any residual unwanted energies, both good and bad. To push the refresh button and reload the stone with your own emotions. And, from time to time, on a daily, weekly, monthly, annually basis, to repeat the cleansing.
Crystals absorb and then emanate. They are highly susceptible stones, and not only perceive human vibrations, but the environment’s as well.
Healing crystals, in particular, should undergo the process of thorough purification. Their power may become ineffective if negative energies are in store. For example, if they have been employed in healing health issues.
All in all, the act of cleansing crystals carries therapeutical value. Think of a crystal as your home, a favorite dress, grandmother’s china ware, the back garden that needs tending. You go to great lengths to keep everything around you sparkling clean. Why not your crystal collection?
The following are a few suggested methods for cleansing, energizing and overall improving your crystals. These methods vary according to the stone’s chemical composition, level or hardness, and healing properties.
Cleansing Crystals – Methods to Energize and Restore Your Stone
Cleansing Crystals by Water
Water is the universal cleanser and the ‘driving force of all nature’. No method seems more natural and common-sense than cleansing your crystal with water.
If you live in the vicinity of seas or oceans, salt water is the best to purify your stones because of its electric properties. Soak your crystals in a bath of sea water, or even water mixed with sea salt.
Spring, lake, or filtered water work as well, although tap water is less recommended.
Place the stone in a glass bowl (not metal) filled with water. Then leave it on your windowsill or anywhere it can receive sunlight for about 24 hours. Ideally, the crystal should be facing south.
However, you should keep in mind that some stones are not very water-friendly. Types of crystals that should not be submerged in water are:
- Stones with a hardness level of 5 or less on the Mohs scale.
- Crystals that contain iron, like Hematite, Magnetite, and Lodestone.
- Salt crystals like Halite – because they will dissolve in water.
- Stones with a high water content, like Opal.
- Other crystals like the Desert rose, Selenite, and Malachite.
Energizing Crystals by Moon
Selenite might not enjoy a splash in the water, but it certainly loves a full moon. A full moon sounds the time to release the old and the unwanted. Crystals respond to that calling.
It matters little if the sky is cloudy or the weather rainy. Your crystals can still catch those moonlight rays and amass the proper energies. Just place them where they can bathe in the white light.
Many people like to make a ritual of burying their stones under a full moon, thus doubling the energy input from the combined magnetic force of earth and its natural satellite.
How much time should you cleanse a crystal by moonlight? It depends on the stone’s work input, to put it in these terms. For example, crystals such as Lepidolite, Black Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz, or Lapis Lazuli are commonly used to treat depression.
Thus, they might require up to 48 hours of moonlight bathing to release those negative energies and fully recharge their healing batteries.
Energizing Crystals by Sun
Compared to the gentleness of moonlight, the sun provides a stronger energy of a fiercer nature.
While many orange, red, or yellow crystals enjoy a good sun tan, others burn easily. The latter will either change or fade in color if exposed for too long to sunlight.
One clue as to what type of crystals should stay out of the sun is transparency. See-through stones like Amethyst and Aquamarine or pigmented crystals would rather bathe in moonlight.
Here’s a list, by no means exhaustive, of other crystals not to be exposed to prolonged stints in powerful sunlight: Ametrine, Auralite23, Citrine, Celestite, Opal, Rose Quartz, Spirit Quartz, Kunzite, Topaz, Turquoise, etc.
Cleansing Crystals by Earth
One part of the cleansing method is retuning the crystals back to their original vibrations. Everything carries sound within, stones and earth alike.
Bury the crystals directly into the ground or, if you don’t like the idea of getting them dirty, wrap them up in a light cotton or silk piece of fabric.
Leave mother earth tending to the crystal for at least 24 hours. Keep in mind that the stone needs to be at least a 6 on the Mohs hardness scale. Otherwise, the moisture in the ground can hurt the crystal.
Cleansing Crystals by Sound
How to cleanse healing crystals? A Crystal Tibetan singing bowl is one option. Crystal bowl have been used in healing methods since the 1980s.
The vibrations the bowl emits while you play it will resonate throughout the room and clear away any negative energies the crystal might have stored over time.
The important thing is to have the stone within the sound’s vibrations. Place them near the bowl and run a tuning fork, drums, or tingshas (Tibetan cymbals) over your crystals.
Cleansing Crystals by Smudging
An ancient ceremony in which sacred plants, especially sage, are burnt in order to clear and bless a space, smudging is a widely used technique to cleanse crystals.
Sage is for healing. The herb is said to ‘wash’ the outside world off a being, to clean the path to transcendence.
How do you smudge crystals? You can either burn readymade smudge sticks – which are usually mixed with lavender, or use a simple loose sage leaf.
Hold the crystals in the smoke for at least one minute to ensure the purification process is successful. Or simply waft the smoke over the stones.
Other fragrant herbs can also remove built-up negative energies. Try smudging with sweetgrass, sandalwood or cedarwood.
Cleansing Crystals by Rice or Flower Petals
These are relatively simple and effective methods. Bury the crystals either in a bowl of rose and lavender petals or of salt and brown rice.
Rice is known to absorb anything, from the water in your smartphone after you’ve dropped in the bathtub to the negative energies in your crystals. Just make sure you throw the rice after using it.
Cleansing Crystals by Other Crystals
Just like human beings receive influences from their peers, crystals also respond to other crystals. You can place your stone on top of a large Amethyst cluster or Quartz Crystal generator.
Alternatively, you can put in a bag with a tumbled Carnelian, Citrine or Kyanite. These stones help align our chakras. Plus, any healing crystal needs a healer in turn.
Cleansing crystals on a regular basis is not only recommended but necessary if you want them to perform their best. Crystals are emotional healers, but sometimes they need a stress-free, well-deserved break. Just like the rest of us.
